I've not created a boot drive myself. Here's a link with instructions on how to create a boot drive for Mountain Lion. I've not used this link so can't vouch for its safety or workability. The link refers to downloading Mountain Lion from the app store, but might work also for a download from a third party source.

You would want to create the boot on an external drive. You can do it on your computer hard drive, but you would need to create a partition. Here's a link that you might find helpful, although not having done a partition myself I can't vouch for the instructions.
