- edited December 2018My assumption is that the day you activate you have 2 years to the day before it expires. So if I activate on 10/10/17 I need to hope that Quicken releases Quicken 2020 prior to October 10, 2019 or I have a gap in service. I have seen Quicken release well into Nov in the past. Starting this year you need to consider the next release date before you buy/load. It will just push back purchases until later in the year. Quicken should line up sunset date with membership expiration date if they want to sell more software earlier.

- edited December 2018As Quicken has stated, under the subscription policy, there won't be annual releases as in the past. They can now make improvements as needed without the need to meet the 'annual' update.

Quicken's concept is that as long as you keep your subscription active, you will have the latest version/release of Quicken installed on your computer via updates, so in your computer replacement scenario, you would just download the current iteration of Quicken and install it.Splasher, thanks for the clarification, I need to adjust to this new model for Quicken. Ok got it, thanks. One last question, I currently run Quicken on my desktop and my lap top do you foresee an issue having two computers update under the membership model? There is nothing shown on the box that definitively clarifies your question, BUT, I have not heard anything that changes the old 'installed on up to three computers in a household' clause in the prior EULA.

Nothing, cuz you'd still have an expired subscription that you'd have to renew for it to work - and you'll have the latest and greatest version when you do. Gold or Silver, if you cannot access it because they took away the vault key, is worthless until you regain the key and put it back to use.

I may have missed what your existing version is - so alternatively if yours is still valid, you could wait and see what other reviewers would say in the next few months. I'm running 2015 so I have until next April, but I would like to upgrade. I worry about bugs (seeing 15 patches for 2015), and I'm still a little hazy on the mechanics of the membership thing but I will need to migrate at some point in the next five months and I have the itch now. Quicken 2018 has not been officially released yet. One of the retail outlets put it on sale early, but it won’t be generally available until the second half of October.I would like to know where to buy this? - edited October 2018The new subscription does introduce an interesting decision. In the past it didn't matter when you bought as far as online services been discontinued, because they expired at the same time for the same version, no matter when you installed/registered.
But now when you activate does determine when your subscription starts, and of course ends.
In the long run it doesn't matter too much since you will just be renewing once a year or say every two years, so the only real difference is when that starts. For someone using Quicken 2015 my recommendation would be the start of April 2018.
Why?
Well not really to get the extra months, but more to allow for the fact that there always seem to be some bugs when Quicken if first released that are best avoided, as in waiting a few months for the patches. I see no reason why Quicken 2018 won't fall into this category any more than any version of Quicken in past my memory (I had problems with Quicken 2007 because I tried to used it right when it was released.)
Once they are on a continuous update schedule that should be different, but for now Quicken 2018 is as much a 'big bang release' as in of the year releases that came before it. - edited November 2018I find it interesting and odd that Quicken elected to release the 2018 software in large quantities to Office Depot for more than a week now (the store near me had boxes of them) and not release any information including the EULA.

I suspect those particular Office Depot stores jumped the gun. It's not unusual for a company to distribute a product to retail outlets before the official release date so on that date they can put them out for sale. When Office Depot received Quicken 2018 I wouldn't be surprised if Quicken told them not put them out for sale until the official release date. I did a search on officedepot.com and could not find any version of Quicken 2018 just 2017 and I suspect you won't see it on the website until the official release date. Sometime it's available for pre-order but you can't even pre-order it on officedepot.com. When Apple was preparing to release their latest iPhone you can be sure that the various retail outlets had them in their possession days before the official 'for sale' date so that they would be available to consumers in-store on day 1 of the official release date. Knowing Apple they probably stipulated that under penalty of death that those phones could not be sold under any circumstances until that official release date. Actually--the release date was planned for later, but as happens every year, some retailers are eager and put the product on the shelves before the release date. However, the EULA should be available in the product--it's just not externally online yet--

Here my guess of the process.
The process is in fact one reason you have the 'big bang'.
As in Quicken works right up to the official release trying to get things into the software (mostly bug fixes at this late, and getting the servers up to date), but there is no way to cut X amount of CDs, and print and package them and send to stores in zero time.
So in reality the The decision go/no go has to be made about a month (my guess from the past) before it goes on sale, and that release version is what goes on the CD. And all the final scheduling starts, and can't be stopped at that point.
But in reality something like a couple of weeks 'fudge' time it built into the sending of the CD/packages, so when everything runs smoothly the retainers have Quicken a week or two early.
And Intuit/Quicken Inc isn't Apple, they can't control their retainers like Apple can.
I would imagine on the other hand with a subscription and the concept of continuous releases. In fact Quicken Inc would just send out CD periodically, but it wouldn't really matter that much if the customer got this year's CD or next so there shouldn't be a reason for a 'big bang month ahead of knowing if it is really going to be done decision'. - edited November 2018Kathryn, I have not got around to loading 2018 yet, so I have not seen the US EULA, but can I load 2018 on my desk top and lap top?
